Building Practical Solutions to Natural Resource Management Issues
From a global perspective, assessing and managing catchments as integrated entities is, and will increasingly be, a key instrument for sustaining our economic, social, cultural and environmental assets. iCAM’s mission is to develop further the tools that provide predictive understanding of catchment behaviour - and combine these into an integrated assessment approach to support informed debate and decision-making related to key natural resource issues.

Working with Industry and Researchers
iCAM has adopted a deliberate policy of building a balanced research portfolio of domestic and international projects with a core group of researchers. Project based research is preferred to ensure relevance and direct engagement with industry and interest groups. iCAM researchers are skilled and experienced in developing integrated solutions to catchment management issues focussed on meeting client needs.

Being located within a teaching and research university ensures academic rigour and strong linkages with current and future researchers. iCAM is very active in these areas, establishing networks of resource management specialists, conducting undergraduate and postgraduate environmental modelling courses and attracting high calibre students into its PhD and undergraduate supervision programme.

Disciplinary and Integration Experts
The Centre has core expertise in integrated catchment and climate impact assessment and management, especially:

  • integrated modelling of environmental / socio-economic trade-offs associated with water management, particularly issues such as sustainability of coastal lake catchments, water allocation and environmental flows
  • integrated modelling of climate impacts and adaptation responses
  • pollutant source identification, mobilisation and transport modelling at local and basin scales
  • catchment scale modelling of land use change and infrastructure impacts on stream water yield and quality
  • engaging stakeholder groups and effectively communicating research methods and results
  • development of software and decision support tools for catchment management.
  • sensitivity and uncertainty analysis

Developing Unique Solutions Packaged to Meet Client Needs
Product style is dictated by interest group needs and working within the appropriate delivery mechanisms. iCAM has expertise in packaging research results in software solutions, reports, newsletters, training materials, conferences and journals. Getting the message across ― and incorporating feedback ― have top priority and iCAM has a quality track record in delivery and reporting of research outcomes and capacity building to facilitate adoption.
